Flight Lieutenant Michael O'Flynn was born in Fermoy. His parents were Thomas and Annie O'Flynn who lived in St.Brigid Street, Fermoy.

Hunting Provost T.53


The aircraft concerned was a Hunting Provost T.53 two-seat, side-by-side low wing monoplane, powered by a 550hp Alvis Leonides radial engine. The aircraft was delivered new to the Irish Army Air Corp. on the 20th.September 1955, and was based at Baldonnell Military Airport Co. Dublin.

Crash on Richmond Hill


Sometime after taking off from Baldonnell Airport on the 3rd January 1957 the aircraft crashed in a field adjacent to the east of Richmond Hill Fermoy, and known locally as Spillane's Field.


Funeral of Michael O'Flynn
The crew of the aircraft consisted of two with Michael being the pilot. This was his maiden solo flight, and it was customary at the time that pilots on their maiden solo flight could fly over their home town and dip their aircraft wings. Both of the crew were killed in the crash.
